Letter From the Chair
On January 21st and 22nd, the State Bar hosted its second annual California Solo and Small Firm Summit. The Summit was designed to provide solo and small firm lawyers with strategic solutions for the practice of law and the management of their offices. Once again, the Summit was a huge success.
Over 200 people attended the Summit (even more than last year), which was held at the Westin Long Beach Hotel. Attendees were able to earn up to 6 hours of MCLE credit. The courses offered covered a wide range of subjects—including ethics, personnel management, technology, and cost effective approaches to running a law practice—and all the courses were focused on the needs and interests of solo and small firm practitioners.
The event was structured so that several times throughout the day everyone returned to the main conference room for general sessions. This structure gave attendees frequent opportunities to network and share ideas with other lawyers who face the same challenges in operating their practices.
Tricia Horan, the State Bar’s Manager of Section Education & Meeting Services, coordinated the event. According to Tricia, a couple of years ago the Bar established a focus group consisting of solo and small firm practitioners to find out what the Bar could do to better meet their needs. One of the points the participants emphasized was that they wanted more access to courses on marketing.
The Bar responded by inviting Stephen Fairley to the Summit to act as moderator and keynote speaker. Participants told the Bar he was the primary reason they attended the Summit; the exceptional networking opportunities was the second most popular reason.
Stephen provided a wealth of information on how to market a solo and small firm practice cost effectively and profitably. Attendees enthusiastically took note of his many ideas, including how to build a Web site that will generate hits (and new clients), and how to use social networking sites to bring in business.
As Tricia commented, between Stephen’s energetic presentations and the extensive networking opportunities available, there was an energy to this conference you do not often see. One table of lawyers made a commitment to one another that after the Summit they would touch bases once a month and follow up on goals; they ended the event posing for group pictures.
As was the case last year, the Section was committed to working with the Bar to help make the Summit as beneficial as possible to solo and small firm practitioners. Several members of the Section’s Executive Committee presented programs at the Summit, and the Section had a booth in the exhibit hall so that attendees could come by and learn more about what the Section has to offer members.
There are plans to put on another Summit next year, and the Section will once again play a role.
We hope you will consider participating in this important and valuable event in 2011.
